I’ve been thinking about this for several days, and finally decided that maybe I should share my thoughts. With times, the means of communication seem to accelerate. When I was a kid, I remember my dad having the ‘brick’ phone, and not long after as the phone industry evolved, he had the Nokia…you know the one with the game ‘snakes’ on it?

I got my first phone when I was 19 years old; a simple Pantech C150 – today’s kids probably don’t even know what that is – but anyway, I was super ecstatic to have a mobile phone, even though I had to share with my older sister (or she had to share with me…)

And then…it just got better from there on supposedly. A year later I had my first smart phone, and now I’m heading on to the new S3.

Contrary to the modern means of communication, I couldn’t help but think that the old-fashioned way, the roots of communication, talking face to face, was by far, the best means available.

It came to mind when I was reminiscing on the times I would sit with my parents and sisters after dinner, and how we would talk for over an hour before we realised that time had just passed us by. The realisation came when I would (and still do) eagerly wait for my husband to come home so we can tell each other about our days. I realised then, that nothing tops a good conversation with people who play an important part in my life.

Think about it; you call someone because you want to speak to them and cannot see them at that precise moment, or you email somebody because you are remembering them or need something, but cannot see them by just clicking your fingers; so ultimately the ideal scenario would include you and the other person sitting face to face and talking about whatever it is you want to talk about right?

So why is it, that when it comes to families, couples, and relationships, we seem to sometimes miss the importance of communication; the factor that BUILDS the relationship and cements it? Why is it that we avoid talking about our concerns with those who matter, and in turn leave it till it is too late? Why is it, that we rely on text messages and voicemails and emails to portray our mood or our feelings?

If you ask me, I’d say a true spokesperson, a person who really has the gift of the gab, is one who has mastered communication through conversation. If one can talk and express to loved ones, friends, employers, and anybody else, then one has truly understood the gift he or she has been granted with.

Granted…there’s a time and place to speak….but that’s for another blog entry…
