Their Journey, Our Learning…

“When an individual passes away, it is a reminder for those around him to take heed.”

In the span of 11 days, the Orlando Khoja Shia Community has been left void of two amazing personalities.

By no means would I be doing justice in writing a tribute for either, as I only got to know them in the later years of their life, but here, I hope to share one touching characteristic that stood out in each of these individuals that I hope to adapt and that we can all learn from.

On Monday November 28, 2016, Marhuma Nargisbai Ladak was reunited with her Creator. Indeed a loss, not only for her children and grandchildren, but for all of us who were and still are ‘the Orlando Community family’. I remember vividly, when she first moved to Orlando. We would pick her up on our way to mosque, or to Tafsir classes, as she lived right around the corner. Her distinctive trademark would be that you could ask her any question and she would respond, always ending with ‘Alhamdulillah, Khuda nu Shukr che Beta’, ‘Praise be to God, Thanking God, Dear’, raising her hand. In the later years that we were in Orlando, despite feeling old age, she never once complained, and constantly thanked God. She taught me to be thankful at all time and reminded me of the Hadith of Imam Ali (A) where he says ‘When some blessings come to you, do not drive them away through thanklessness’.

‘Days like Today’

Everybody has ‘one of those days’. Today was mine.

If I miss the 8:07am bus to work, it affects my whole daily schedule! I tend to then miss my second bus as I’m late, and then I walk into work later than I’m supposed to. There’s no telling how late! So when I woke up this morning and saw my phone clock say 8:05am, I knew I was definitely going to have one of those days.

What’s tougher is to try putting a positive spin on what I knew would be a day going south! But trust me, perspective rules the day! When I began to look for the granules of positive in everything that was happening today, I found that there was more worth to my day than I gave credit for.

It is around 10:30pm and the day has been pretty awesome. So though this post is short, it’s just a reminder to me and all of you reading out there that our perspective on life can change how we live our lives.  Be positive! When we choose to be positive God also sees our efforts and we see more doors of opportunity open in front of us.

Reflect, Recharge, and Progress!

“A life experience that inspires an internal revolution is actually Guidance from God to look within, reflect, and prepare for the journey ahead.”

It’s true. These are trying times.

As part of an initiative to show the world that we are truly peaceful people and that we are not what the media portrays us as; a group of Muslims from the Toronto Jaffari Community Centre went down to Yonge-Dundas Square on Saturday 19th December, 2015 to distribute Chocolates to those passing by.

We customized the chocolate wrappers; inviting others to share our joy as we celebrate the Birth of our Holy Prophet Muhammad. The message was simple; get to know Muhammad.

At first, I was more pumped up about participating in such an event and didn’t give much thought to the potential responses we could get from the general public, but we did receive all sorts, and it gave me more to reflect upon.

A Yearning for Azadari

For several days I have wanted to put my thoughts onto paper; especially as we mentally and spiritually prepare ourselves for the upcoming days of Muharram.

I’ve been feeling an eagerness to participate in the commemoration of the Tragedy of Kerbala; yet not the kind of eagerness filled with excitement and bubbling emotions.
It seems more like a yearning; a soul-searching call; a need to participate in the Azadari, to cry from the heart, to retell the story of Husayn; and to play the scenes in my mind from what I have seen in the Kerbala we know today. As I hear of Zawwar preparing for their journey; tears well up in my eyes; when will Husayn call me back to him?
There is no place I would rather be, than on that Holy land; and God only knows how emotional it is to just think of not being there; but here I am, and here I shall revive my soul. In spirit, I am with you, Oh Husayn.

Brotherly Bonds!

You know how girls usually have this crazy ‘connection’ with their sisters or best friends, and we feel guys will never really understand?

We are ’emotional beings’ and they don’t really get it…or so we think…

Over the last month…I learnt something quite different. Give a guy the opportunity to ‘open up’ or ‘be sentimental’ and he can be just that.

I’m learning.

My better half has two brothers; and no sisters. So when I first got married I found it quite difficult to comprehend that my mother in law and I were the only ones chatting at the dinner table while the boys would focus intently at their food, working on it like it was a mission; and then cautiously excuse themselves from the table when they felt they could get a word in between our conversations.

Hubby in a Nutshell

Over the last few days I’ve been contemplating on whether to write about a personality that has recently entered my life; my husband. Those who are married may just understand where I am coming from.

It has been 2 1/2 months since I tied the knot with Asif, and just over a year since I met him for the first time, and yet I feel as if he has been there forever! Friends and family told me marriage is special; the Holy Prophet (SAW) declared it as completing half your faith; and now, having taken this step, I can see why.

Marriage is a wonderful feeling, but comes with many challenges for the girl; moving homes, adjusting to a new family life, and having the opposite gender play an active role in her day to day life. It comes with obstacles; the girl is no longer thinking just about herself anymore. She must consider her husband, her extended family, and her duties as a married woman.
