For several days I have wanted to put my thoughts onto paper; especially as we mentally and spiritually prepare ourselves for the upcoming days of Muharram.
I’ve been feeling an eagerness to participate in the commemoration of the Tragedy of Kerbala; yet not the kind of eagerness filled with excitement and bubbling emotions.
It seems more like a yearning; a soul-searching call; a need to participate in the Azadari, to cry from the heart, to retell the story of Husayn; and to play the scenes in my mind from what I have seen in the Kerbala we know today. As I hear of Zawwar preparing for their journey; tears well up in my eyes; when will Husayn call me back to him?
There is no place I would rather be, than on that Holy land; and God only knows how emotional it is to just think of not being there; but here I am, and here I shall revive my soul. In spirit, I am with you, Oh Husayn.
Every year, when Muharram approaches, I feel a spiritual ‘high’ and I think there will be no Muharram like THIS Muharram; and it’s true. There is no day like the day of Hazrat Abbas, none like the day where we remember Hazrat Ali Akber, and definitely none like Ashura Day.
Yet, the following year, I’ve grown, I’ve learnt, more experiences have shown me more of this world, and again the feeling comes that this Muharram will be by far my most spiritually uplifting one.
I guess this means there is some sort of progression; the question is whether it is in the right direction, and with the right goals in mind.
Tonight will be the first night of Muharram; worldwide lovers of Imam Husayn (A) and the Ahlul Bayt will gather in their local centers, participating in lectures, eulogies, and vowing for self-reformation.
Oh Lord, during this time, a miraculous time; please allow our hearts to drown in seeking nearness to You, and grant us, grant us the opportunity to be called again by Husayn, year after year, Muharram after Muharram; for as long as you give us life, let it be in the company of the one who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
