…تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ٱلْحَكِيمِ

To my readers, Salāmun ʿalaykum!

Welcome to my first post about my Journey with the Noble Qurʾān. Not too long ago, I too was looking for guidance on how to begin my Journey with the Divine Book. My heart was yearning for more; beyond reciting Juz upon Juz and Surah upon Surah without understanding what I was reciting!

Congratulations! The fact that you are here, reading this post, shows there is a spark in your heart too, urging you to find your inspiration, and I want to help you.

My own journey is new and very recent; but it is one that has given me an inner strength amidst the challenges that I face. With each passing day, as I read the words of my beloved Creator, I feel inspired to strive for His pleasure and grow closer to Him.

The word of God not only touches the heart; it zaps through every fibre of your being; it is a healing. Allah (swt) reminds us of this when He says:‘ ‘And We send down in the Qur’an such things that are a healing and a mercy to those who believe…’ (17:82).

You’ll soon come to realise that the Qurʾān is rooting for you; for you to find your path in reaching nearer to the One who Loves us most. Each time you sit with the Noble Book you’ll feel a richer experience and this journey will nurture your soul, heal your heart, and guide you.

Step-by-step, we can journey together; sharing what we learn, so that we can lift each other up.

Let us begin!

The most important step in this journey is setting an intention. Sh. Muhsin Qara’ati says ‘intention (niyyah) is the criterion of value in every act…’ and this journey with the Qurʾān is no different.

To set the right intention, ask yourself:

  1. Why do I want to connect with the Qurʾān?
  2. How can I purify my intention for Allah’s pleasure?
  3. What do I hope to gain from this journey?
  4. Am I ready to commit my time and effort consistently?

Ask the author of this Miraculous Book to give you barakah in your time when you step away from your day-to-day routine to read His word; ask Him to open your mind so that you may embrace all that He wishes to teach you. Repeat your intention daily, until it is etched upon your heart and in your mind.

Choosing the right Qurʾān is vital. Look for one with Arabic text and an easy-to-understand translation. Consider whether you prefer margin space for notes or journaling options like ‘My Qurʾan Study Journal’ by Sun Behind the Clouds Publications (translated byʿAli Quli Qaraʾi) . This makes the process of reflection easier.

The Qurʾān that I use is titled ‘The Qurʾan With a Phrase-by-Phrase English Translation’ and is translated by ʿAli Quli Qaraʾi. The hardcover of this Qurʾān is difficult to source these days; but the softcover is available in various bookstores and online. This particular translation is now in its 6th edition.

Our intention is to have the Qurʾān with us at all times, but it doesn’t have to be in the physical sense. As the Qurʾān becomes a part of our being, alternative options like a digital app is something we can carry with us at all times. As long as the translation is accessible, we can always jot down notes digitally or in a notebook that we carry, and bring it back to our Journaling Qurʾān when we are home.

Consistency is key to deepening your connection with the Holy Book. Set aside a specific time each day, even if it is just 10-15 minutes, when you can engage with the Qurʾān without any distractions. Some suggestions for time are:

  • After Fajr prayers in the morning
  • Between Dhuhr and ʿAsr prayers in the afternoon
  • At night before going to sleep

Find a time that aligns with your routine and always begin with a duʿāʾ, asking Allah (swt) to help you and guide you. Over time, you’ll soon find that engaging with the Qurʾān becomes a natural and cherished part of your routine.

Let’s Connect!

  1. What has inspired you to start on this journey?
  2. Which Qurʾān will you choose for your journey and why?
  3. What time works best for you to engage with the Qurʾān and why?

Share your thoughts, your chosen Qurʾān, the time you’ve chosen to set aside, or even any questions you have in the comments below.

I pray that as you ignite the spark in your heart, you find a special joy reserved only for your soul, in your journey with the Qurʾān.
