In retrospect; the Flag stood as a central pivot for the wave of black that circulated around it. My eyes closed, I could hear a unanimous beat, a sense that young and old in unison urged to revive their souls by beating their chests. Or did they?
Smiles formed on their lips, – gum-chewing, socially chatting, not a care in the world – girls jumped at the chance to be a part of that wave; but all for the wrong reasons. The flag, and the flag-bearer whose bravery we have constantly been reminded of was the central icon tonight – but I ask, was your pride to stand, to circle, to be a part of a ritual, such that you forgot why you were there? Whom were you mourning?
It broke my heart to see that in fact; we were the ones controlling the atmosphere around the pivot, it was not the pivot controlling our emotions – we didn’t allow it. The historical event, the tragedy so distant in years, but so close to home in ethics and morals has not really penetrated through our hearts – we haven’t allowed it – not this year, and who knows if your visa for life will even be valid next year….?
There’s an ethical approach to everything, a logic behind our every action, but we seem to have missed the point. This year, I wanted to be a part of something great; a movement, a revolution, a human change. I sit, and I watch, and I feel remorse – I could have at least initiated a human change within me, a revolution in my soul, a movement of my mind, my conscious, my aims, and my goals.
It isn’t too late; if we want to be so much like the West and imitate the illusional ideals – their New Year is 48 minutes away – set yourself some standard.
